Recently, NASA scientists found traces of ocean on the Ceres Dwarf Planet. This dwarf planet lies in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Also, the dwarf planet Ceres is the largest object in the belt. The data collected from the Dawn spacecraft scientist analyse it and on the basis of their analysis they give ceres title of “Ocean World“. The analysed data by NASA scientists is published on journals such as Nature Astronomy, Natures communication and Natures Geoscience.
What is a Dwarf Planet?
Basically, a dwarf planet resembles the small planet but lack certain technical criteria to be called a planet. There are five official dwarf planets in our Solar system. The famous one is the pluto which lacks the criteria as a planet in 2006. But it is too large to be seen as an asteroid. Hence the pluto comes under the category of the dwarf planets. The other four dwarf planets are Eris, Makemake, Haumea and Ceres. The sixth is the dwarf planet Hygiea which is now put under the category of the asteroid.
What Are The Needed To Be Called As Planet?
The International Astronomical Union gives the position to the celestial bodies in order to recognize them as the planet or dwarf planet. There are four criteria if celestial bodies have then it regains the status of dwarf planets.
- Firstly, celestial bodies must revolve around the sun.
- Secondly, The size of bodies should not be less than Moon.
- Thirdly, It should be dominant in the solar system.
- Fourth, The mass of the bodies and gravity tends to make the body in the sphere shape.
Past Exploration of Ceres Dwarf Planet
Guiseppe Piazzi an astronomer who spots the Ceres planet first. According to him, Ceres is a missing planet between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres is the first dwarf planet which was explored by the Dawn spacecraft. The Dawn spacecraft launch in 2007 to explore Vesta and Ceres. In 2015, NASA Dawn spacecraft reach Ceres and start studying its surface composition and history. The spacecraft collects samples where the scientists found that there was an ocean a long time ago. Scientists were studying this dwarf planet because it has the possibility of having water. The sign of water means the sign of life. That’s why scientists were more obsessed with the research on this planet. According to the scientists “Almost Everywhere We Find Water On Earth, We Find Life“. And this statement is true. Another reason to do research on this planet because it can give insights about the formation of the solar system. The scientists believe that Ceres is the part of it when the solar system was formed.
Nasa Dawn spacecraft found out many interesting things ” ice, salts and minerals which shows that once upon a time there exist an ocean”. Also, the spacecraft was able to capture the high-resolution photos from 35 km above the surface of Ceres. When the scientists analyse the data they came to the conclusion that a big reservoir of water which is 40 km deep and hundred of miles wide. According to the scientist’s research there are several other dwarf planets and moon in the solar system where ocean exists. This includes the moons of Saturn and Jupiter.
